Ahmedabad: In an exciting final match that kept the spectators on their toes till the last ball, Chennai Super Kings managed to win the record 5th trophy with a 5-wicket win against Gujarat Titans. Needing 10 runs off the last 2 balls, Ravindra Jadeja hit a six and a four against veteran fast bowler Mohit Sharma to seal victory for CSK.
CSK target 171 runs in 15 overs
Chasing an impossible target of 215 runs for victory, CSK started batting and faced 3 balls when torrential rain started and the game was interrupted. CSK had a tough target of 171 runs in 15 overs when the game was halted for 2 hours and resumed at 12:10.
CSK played in a sloppy manner
CSK, who were under pressure to score 12 runs in the over to win, had started playing the game right from the start. Rituraj Gaikwad (26), Devon Conway (47), Shivam Dubey (32*), Ajinkya Rahane (27), Ravindra Jadeja (15*) and Ambati Rayudu (19) bowled CSK's victory. Despite Noor Ahmed (2 for 17) and Mohit Sharma (3 for 36) taking wickets for the Titans, luck held CSK's hand. With this win, CSK has won the most trophies in IPL (5), equaling Mumbai Indians' record.
Titans Big Target
Batting first after the toss, Gujarat Titans got off to a flying start. Shubhaman Gill, who used the life support he got initially, blasted 37 runs in 28 balls. Despite hinting at another big inning, Ravindra Jadeja was disappointed as he was stumped against MS Dhoni's wicketkeeping prowess. Titans scored 66 runs in 7 overs for the first wicket. Another opener Wriddhiman Saha (54) scored a blistering half-century.
Sai Sudarshan Powerful Batting
Young batsman Sai Sudarshan, who was struggling to get runs at the beginning of the innings, scored 8 runs in 10 balls. However, the speed of scoring slowly increased and 96 runs in 47 balls led to the huge total of the CDC Titans team. Gujarat Titans made a peak of 214 runs for 4 wickets in their 20 overs. In the slog overs, Hardik Pandya blasted an unbeaten 21 runs in 12 balls.
Dhoni's lightning stumping
The young opener Shubman Gill gave an explosive start to the Gujarat Titans team who lost the toss and batted first in the final match of the IPL 2023 tournament held on Monday (May 29), which was called off due to rain. Gill, who scored 39 runs off the 20 balls he faced, including 3 fours and another six, gave every indication of playing another big inning.
But, in the 7th over of the innings, Gill fell victim to MS Dhoni's lightning stumping. Beaten by off-spinner Ravindra Jadeja, Gill's back foot was inches out of the crease. Gill brought his leg in no time, but by that time Dhoni had thrown the bales. With this, the partnership of 67 runs available for the first wicket for the Titans also ended.
